Historical fantasy with proper politics under it. The romance is the slower half.

The follow-up to When the Moon Hatched. Two people torn apart by a war neither of them started.

The world-building is the draw. The emotional damage is the bonus.

5. House of Blight, Maxym M. Martineau

Edira is a threadmender: she heals wounds by taking them into herself. A noble family finds out.

Gothic, haunted, and heavy on forbidden. Best read somewhere with bad weather.

6. Nightweaver, R.M. Gray

Revenge plot, supernatural inheritance, a heroine one bad decision away from real power.

Dark, brooding, and entirely aware of what it is doing with its love interest.

7. Her Soul for a Crown, Alysha Rameera

Sri Lankan mythology, a fierce heroine named Anula, and a pact with a Yakka god that costs more than she agreed to.

Enemies to lovers, lyrical prose, morally compromised everybody.

8. Accomplice to the Villain, Hannah Nicole Maehrer

The sequel to Assistant to the Villain, and still the funniest thing in the genre.

A relentlessly cheerful assistant, an evil boss, and banter doing most of the heavy lifting. The palate cleanser on this list.

9. The Primal of Blood and Bone, Jennifer L. Armentrout

More of the Blood and Ash world: gods, mortals, and consequences stacking up.

10. Tusk Love, Thea Guanzon

The Critical Role in-joke, written out properly as a novel. An orc warrior and a noblewoman on the run.

Warmer and funnier than the rest of this list, and it works even if you have never watched a minute of the show.
