You do not need a Kindle Unlimited subscription for any of this. Everything below is free to download and yours to keep.

Where to find free Kindle books

Three sources cover almost everything worth having.

Amazon's Top 100 Free list. Search "free Kindle books" and sort by the free chart. It moves constantly, which is the point. Check it every few weeks rather than once and forget it.

Project Gutenberg. Around 70,000 out-of-copyright titles, properly formatted. This is where the classics live.

Open Library. Best for the odd, out-of-print things that turn up nowhere else.

One thing to know before you start. Books from Amazon land on your Kindle by themselves. Books from Gutenberg or Open Library need sending across yourself, either by email to your Kindle address or over USB. It takes a minute. It also catches out almost everyone the first time.

Ten free books worth starting with

All ten are in the public domain, which means free everywhere, forever. No trial, no catch, no first-book-of-nine hook.

1. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen

Romance, and the blueprint for most of what came after it. Every enemies-to-lovers you have read this year owes it something.

2. Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte

Gothic, strange, and far less tidy than its reputation suggests. Worth reading properly rather than remembering from school.

3. Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte

Not a love story. People will tell you it is. Read it and see.

4. Frankenstein, Mary Shelley

Written by a teenager on a dare, and still the sharpest book about making something you cannot control.

5. Dracula, Bram Stoker

Told entirely in letters and diary entries, which makes it move much faster than you expect.

6. The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde

Beautiful, vicious, and quotable on nearly every page.

7. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle

Short stories, so it suits the ten minutes before bed better than most things do.

8. The Time Machine, H.G. Wells

Barely a hundred pages, and a whole genre starts here.

9. The Call of the Wild, Jack London

Cold, spare and properly brutal. Heads up: it is hard going if you are sensitive about animals.

10. Little Women, Louisa May Alcott

Comfort reading with more teeth than the adaptations let on.

How to tell a good freebie from a bad one

Free is a wide net. Public domain classics are safe, because they are free for a legal reason rather than a marketing one. Everything else takes two seconds of judgement.

Read the review count, not just the star rating. Forty reviews at 4.2 tells you more than six at five stars.

Check the page count. A lot of permanently free titles are book one of nine, which is lovely if you want the series and irritating if you do not.

Browse by category rather than the general free chart. The chart skews towards whatever is being pushed that week.

If you are reading for someone else

For kids: The Velveteen Rabbit and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Both public domain, both better read aloud.

For a long flight: Anna Karenina. Free, enormous, and it will genuinely last the trip.

For a thriller mood: The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers, an early spy novel that holds up better than it has any right to.

Before you go

A full library costs nothing, which is the best part of the whole thing. The catch, if there is one, is that a Kindle you love is a Kindle that lives in your bag rather than a drawer.
