October 2026 New & Anticipated Book Releases
Share
It's here. The month the entire reading internet has circled on the calendar: A Court of Splintered Harmony, the sixth ACOTAR book, lands on 27 October, and everything else in publishing has politely arranged itself around that date. Everything else is very good, to be clear. Freida McFadden goes witchy, Bonnie Garmus follows up Lessons in Chemistry, Emily Henry is blurbing other people's books now, and Christmas romance arrives early and in force. Every date below is verified for Australian release this month.
Deep breath. Here we go.
Romantasy & fantasy
A Court of Splintered Harmony, Sarah J. Maas (27 October). Six years after the last visit to Prythian, book six lands, and it finally has a name: the opening movement of a new arc called The Valkyrie Cycle. Pre-orders broke records the day the title was announced, and none of that has slowed anyone down. This is the release of the year, in any genre.
Victorious, V.E. Schwab (6 October). A new standalone from the Addie LaRue author, and her covers alone justify the hardback.
Rounding out the court:
- This Shattered Tempest, Thea Guanzon (8 October): The Hurricane Wars book three, enemies to lovers in a storm-wracked empire.
- To Dream in Darkness, Ann Liang (27 October): the I Hope This Doesn't Find You author goes full dark academia fantasy.
- Reap & Sow, Charlotte B. Plumb (8 October): a death-god romantasy debut with BookTok already circling.
And the second shelf, because October earned one too
The Tarot Trials, Katee Robert (27 October). The Dark Olympus author deals a new deck: a deadly tournament where every card is a test. Her readers will be there on day one.
Scorpion Deep, C.G. Drews (29 October). Australian author, fantasy with teeth, and one of ours. Support the home team.
Also on the shelf:
- Hallowed Bones, Lucy Smoke (6 October): dark academia meets darker magic.
- Devoured, Jordan Stephanie Gray (6 October): a hunger-and-monsters romantasy for the Devour Me crowd.
- With Hearts of Flame, Briar Boleyn (20 October): mythic romantasy from the Queen of Roses author.
- The Sixth Faction, Veronica Roth (8 October): the Divergent author returns to factions, older and sharper.
Contemporary romance & rom-com
October's rom-coms have decided it is already Christmas, and we are not going to argue.
A Married Little Christmas, Abby Jimenez (20 October). An illustrated holiday collection from the queen of the modern rom-com. The gift-buying starts here.
Broken Rival, Tessa Bailey (6 October). Rivals, memory, and Bailey's trademark tension. The premise is a trap and we walked straight in.
Also this month:
- Merry Spooky Love, Josie Silver (8 October): a Melody Bittersweet novel, Halloween-to-Christmas romance in one shopfront.
- It's Only Dancing, Jasmine Guillory (6 October): a dance-floor romance with Guillory's effortless charm.
- Christmas Staycation, Meghan Quinn (20 October): snowed in, forced proximity, Quinn at her cosiest.
- How to Troll a Guy in Ten Days, Pippa Grant (6 October): a viral-sensation romance built to be screenshotted.
Cowboy, small-town & sport romance
Undone, Peyton Corinne (20 October). The Unsteady author returns with more hockey and more heart. Bring tissues.
Crash Course, Piper Lawson (20 October). Motorsport romance with a rookie and a rival, built for readers who like their slow burns at speed.
Also saddling up:
- Never Been Tamed, Corinne Michaels (6 October): a cowboy, a city girl, a ranch that fixes both.
- Mistletoe All the Way, Lauren Blakely (6 October): Christmas tree farm, grumpy owner, sunshine visitor.
- The Last Goodbye, Laura Pavlov (6 October): small-town second chances, Pavlov's speciality.
Historical fiction
Partita, Barbara Kingsolver (6 October). Her first novel since the Pulitzer-winning Demon Copperhead. A pianist, a war, and a life measured in movements. The literary event of the month.
Samantha: The Next Chapter, Fiona Davis (13 October). An American Girl legacy novel for the adults who grew up with her, from the Lions of Fifth Avenue author. Pure nostalgia, properly done. [LISA TO CONFIRM: no Amazon AU listing found in any format as of 30 August, keeping the entry pending your call.]
Also this month:
- Adam & Eve, Jeffrey Archer (6 October): divided by class, united by love, from the global No.1 bestseller.
- American Crow, Ryan Burruss (6 October): a haunted stretch of American woods and the history buried in it.
- The Undying Lamb, Paul Brous (6 October): an epic of empire and a child who holds the key to a forgotten legacy.
Thriller & mystery
October thrillers understood the assignment: haunted hotels, ghosts, and one very suspicious cat.
The Witch, Freida McFadden (6 October). The Housemaid author goes supernatural. McFadden in October is exactly where she belongs.
Miss Wolcott's Ghost, Louise Penny (20 October). The new Chief Inspector Gamache novel, back in Three Pines with a case only that village would attract. Warm, eerie, and out just in time for the long nights.
Please Enjoy Your Stay, Tara Goedjen (20 October). A hotel with a smile and a body count. The haunted-hotel book of the season.
Keep the lamp on for:
- Dive Bar at the End of the Road, Kelley Armstrong (6 October): a bar where lost people wash up, and one of them is lying.
- The Pools, E. Lockhart (6 October): a love story with something underneath the surface, from the We Were Liars author.
- Look What the Cat Dragged In, Jason Rekulak (13 October): the Hidden Pictures author, a cat, and a crime scene.
Book club & literary
Peck & Peck, Bonnie Garmus (13 October). The Lessons in Chemistry follow-up. Book clubs have been holding this date for two years.
Bad Words, Rioghnach Robinson (8 October). A debut novel: literary critic Selina Chan once tanked author Parker Navarro's career with a single review, and now her takedown of his follow-up ignites a viral public feud that turns into something else entirely. Emily Henry is already calling it unmissable.
Round out the club:
- Life Out of Order, Audrey Niffenegger (13 October): the long-awaited follow-up to The Time Traveler's Wife.
- The Brightness, Chad Harbach (27 October): his first novel since The Art of Fielding.
- Once, Again, Always, Amanda Gayle (6 October): Molly Graham wakes from a head injury with six years of memory gone, married to the boarding-school rival she once couldn't stand.
- People Skills, Nina Kenwood (6 October): sharp Australian comedy of manners from the Text Publishing star. Ours, and brilliant.
The one in your hands
By the end of this month you will know how the fae court story continues, and we will all be reading the same book at the same time. Enjoy every page. And when this chapter of the story wraps, the wait for the next one is already on the calendar: ACOTAR 7, A Court of Forgotten Melody, has an AU Kindle date locked in for 12 January 2027. Keep an eye on November too: the last big reading month of the year is stacked, and Christmas romance goes into full production.
A month like this calls for a plan. If your e-reader is coming to the couch, the bath and the 1am chapters with you, dress it for the occasion: something beautiful to pick up is how the reading habit keeps itself.
Happy pre-ordering. The TBR never stood a chance.
