The new Kindles for 2026: what's changed and when they land in Australia

Amazon announced its 2026 Kindle lineup on 1 October, and the short version for Australia is this. The standard Kindle is on sale now. The new Paperwhite and Colorsoft arrive on 11 November. The kids' models are not coming here.

Every model in the range gets the same two changes: a flush-front screen with no bezel, and a smaller, thinner body. Everything below is from Amazon's announcement and its Australian listings, checked on 6 Oct 2026.

What's new across the 2026 range

The flush-front screen is the visible change. The glass now runs edge to edge, with no raised lip around the display, so the front is one flat surface. The bodies shrink to match. Amazon has made all three models noticeably slimmer than their 2024 versions, which we get into measurement by measurement further down.

The reading experience itself is familiar. The same three sizes carry over, the same Paperwhite and Colorsoft pairing stays, and the changes you will notice day to day are in your hand: a flatter front, a lighter weight, a slimmer edge.

The new Kindle (6-inch)

The entry Kindle is the one you can buy today. It comes in Ube and Graphite, and the 32GB aluminium version comes in Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green. Amazon quotes up to six weeks of battery and says books open 30% faster than before (that is Amazon's claim, not ours).

The 2024 Kindle measured 108.6 x 157.8 x 8.0 mm. The 2026 one is 108.0 x 152.8 x 6.85 mm, so it is about 5 mm shorter and over a millimetre thinner. At 140 g it is a very easy thing to hold in bed.

The new Kindle Paperwhite 2026

The new Kindle Paperwhite is the one most people are waiting on, and it lands in Australia on 11 November (the US gets it on 28 October). It has a 7" 300 ppi display, IPX8 waterproofing, an adjustable warm light, and battery of up to 12 weeks. Amazon calls it the highest-contrast Paperwhite yet.

The Signature Edition adds an aluminium back, an auto-adjusting light, dock charging and double-tap to turn pages. It also adds 25 g, taking it to 229 g against 204 g for the standard model.

The 2024 Paperwhite was 127.6 x 176.7 x 7.8 mm. The new one is 126.8 x 174.7 x 6.8 mm: about 2 mm shorter, 0.8 mm narrower and 1 mm thinner. Small numbers, but they matter if you own a case (more on that below).

Kindle Colorsoft 2026

The Colorsoft gets a redesigned colour display, with colour running edge to edge. It is 300 ppi for black and white text and 150 ppi for colour, and it is IPX8 waterproof. The body is the same as the new Paperwhite, 126.8 x 174.7 x 6.8 mm. The Signature Edition comes in Graphite and Fig.

Kindle Click, Scribe and the kids' models

Amazon also announced the Kindle Click, a page-turn remote. It is AU$49.95, out 11 November in Australia, and works with Kindles from 2024 onwards.

There is no new Scribe this round. Kids Kindle and Kids Colorsoft were announced too, but they are launching in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and Japan only, not Australia.

New Kindle release in Australia: the dates

The Kindle (6") is on sale on amazon.com.au now. The Paperwhite, Paperwhite Signature Edition, Colorsoft, Colorsoft Signature Edition and Click all land on 11 November 2026. The 2024 models are still sold on amazon.com.au as well, now listed as the "2024 model".

Will your case fit a 2026 Kindle?

This is the part worth reading slowly if you already own a case, or plan to buy one.

Our cases currently fit the Kindle 11th generation (6.0"), the Paperwhite 11th generation (6.8") and the 12th generation (7.0"). That 12th generation size covers the 2024 Paperwhite, the 2024 Signature Edition and the 2024 Colorsoft, which share one case. They do not fit the Scribe, Kindle Kids, or anything older than 11th generation.

The 2026 models are smaller than the 2024 ones, by the margins in the sections above. A case made for the 2024 Paperwhite will not be a snug fit on a 2026 Paperwhite. Our current cases will not fit them.
