How to Organise Your Kindle Library Like a Pro

There's a particular kind of reader who has two hundred books on their Kindle and genuinely cannot tell you what most of them are. A few free downloads here, a Kindle Unlimited binge there, and suddenly the library looks like a yard sale.

Sorting it out takes an afternoon. After that, choosing your next read stops being a scroll and starts being a choice.

Step One: Audit What's Actually There

Before you can organise, you need to know what you're working with. Go through the library, ideally in the Kindle app on a computer where the screen is bigger, and make honest decisions. Keep what you're genuinely reading. Archive what you might want eventually. Remove the impulse downloads you're never going to open.

The archive function is underused. Archived books come off the device but stay in the cloud, so nothing is lost. They just stop crowding your home screen.

Step Two: Learn to Use Kindle Collections

Collections are folders, and they're the core tool here. On the device, hold down on any book title, choose Add to Collection, then Create New Collection, and name it.

By Genre

Fiction, non-fiction, biography, thriller, romance, fantasy. The simplest system, and the right one if you read widely.

By Status

Currently Reading, Up Next, Finished, Reference. This one mirrors how most readers already think about their books.

By Mood

Beach reads. Cosy winter reads. Light. Heavy. Better for readers who choose by feeling rather than by genre.

Step Three: Sort Your Home Screen

Your home screen can sort by Recent, Title, Author or Collection. Switch it to Collections and you get a handful of folders instead of hundreds of covers. You can pin the ones you use most to the top.

Step Four: Turn On Series View

In settings, Series View groups books from the same series together automatically. If you read series, turn it on now. It is the single change that makes the biggest visual difference.

Maintenance is easier than the first clean-up. Once a week, move finished books out of Currently Reading. Archive anything you've gone off. File new downloads as they land. Thirty seconds, and you never face the big audit again.
